Not suede, but blue (like me and you?). Nice companions from Pratesi in Ambra, Tuscany. A factory which only trades shoes in Tuscany. Three small shops and a small factory in a small village. In fact, if you hurry too much along you will never know you passed the factory. Family-owned business. And I have been lucky enough to meet the owner on one of my shopping trips. Have to go back again this year to look for more niceties, I think.

It’s not hard to find shops for leather jackets in Firenze (aka. Florence). But watch out for those back-street or open air “shops” where they trade non-Italian-made products. They might not have the license for doing what they do. We have visited all the shops in the Santa Croce area these two years and have settled for this one: Poker.

I love my Italian shoes. That’s another story. But Firenze is also famous for a number of other locally made products. (Not only the wine). In and around Firenze there are a lot of small and larger companies making leather products like jackets, bags etc. Normally the use lamb-skin. The skin itself is mostly imported. But the rest of the process is done locally.

Most of the people we talked to said the South-African lamb-skin was the best and gave the best result for jackets. In second place came the lamb-skins they imported from New Zealand.

A number of the shops do mainly trade very traditional designs. Poker does the traditional ones and a number of their own design. You find them in Piazza Santa Croce 28/r, tel. 055 24 22 37. If you refer to the video above you might get a better price than what is listed on the jacket. And remember: the best time for shopping leather goods is when it’s really hot. That’s when the least people shop and the prices are the lowest possible.

Det finnes kanskje ikke den ting man ikke kan. Eller ihvertfall noe man ikke kan. Så kan man jo se om det finnes noen der ute som kan fortelle en ‘hvordan’ slik at man kan lære noe nytt. Stadig er det noen som forsøker seg på opplæringsvirksomhet via internett. Noen, som TeachMac, går sterkt ut og sier “alle kan lære, alle kan undervise”. Men er det nå slik? TeachMac skal ha pluss for at de forsøker. Og de har en løsning for betalt undervisning som kanskje enkelte bidragsytere vil finne forlokkende.

Men dagens vinner i folkeopplysningens tjeneste må nok bli videojug. Ikke bare fordi de dekker et videre spenn av tema: se f.eks. hvordan du lager en rekke pastaretter, hvordan du lager gnocchi og masse annet rart. De har også en rekke historiske filmklipp. Men de er også en vinner fordi de har valgt en enklere og mer tilgjengelig teknologi.

Hva annet kan man lære på videojug? Jo, du kan f.eks. lære hvordan du enkelt kan lage en billig maskin for bretting av t-skjorter og du kan få en del tips om hvordan man bruker en dusj. Begge disse siste eksemplene er bidrag fra brukere. Så her er det bare å finne frem kameraet og lage sin egen instruksjonsvideo.
